His inspirational messages and strong community leadership attracted many families of, mostly Hungarian Chassidim whose previous communities were devastated by the Holocaust. Led by Rabbi Yoel, they rebuilt their Jewish lives as a tight-knit community in the United States. He emphasized a rejection of the surrounding secular world and a steadfastness in the pious and holy lifestyle of traditional Judaism. Today Satmar is the largest Hasidic movement by membership in the world.
